John Milton said:

“Is it just or reasonable, that most voices against the main end of government should enslave the less number that would be free? More just it is, doubtless, if it comes to force, that a less number compel a greater to retain, which can be no wrong to them, their liberty, than that a greater number, for the pleasure of their baseness, compel a less most unjuriously to be their fellow slaves. They who seek nothing but their own just liberty, have always the right to win it, whenever they have power, be the voices never so numerous that oppose it.”

If Milton’s sentiments ring true to you, then you are not alone. American Freemen is an organization dedicated to those few who seek “their own just liberty” and who will fight for Liberty, regardless of the opposition. Today’s society sees the wrongs in government, which are the result of the many compelling the rest to live in slavery. The problem is that most who present solutions simply want to replace one form of slavery with another. American Freemen also has a clear, simple, straight-forward, and workable plan for fixing the problems that face America.

In short, we believe that it is necessary to take back the power that has been usurped by the national politicians and judges and put this power in the hands of local government leaders.

During the Philadelphia Convention of 1787, one of the members of the Committee of Detail, Edmund Randolph of Virginia, noted that "we are not working on the natural rights of men not yet gathered into society, but upon those rights, modified by society and interwoven with what we call the rights of the states."

State representatives, state senators and governors are much less likely to abuse their power and are much more likely to care deeply about what their constituents need and want. Additionally, the individual voter has much more say in state elections and in swaying their representative's decisions than they do with national elections and politicians.

The old adage says that democracy trades one tyrant a thousand miles away for a thousand tyrants one mile away. This is true, but America has something even worse... we have a thousand tyrants a thousand miles away.

The people we send to Washington, D.C. care very little about what is happening in our neighborhoods, cities and states. This is because our representatives' voices are watered down with the voices of representatives from far off states. This works remarkably well for preserving liberty and keeping a check on a large national government's powers. However, on most issues of common concern, it is counter-productive and is in clear violation of the intentions of the Founding Fathers.

Add to all this, the rampant federalization and litigation of every aspect of American life and there can be no wonder as to why this country is as divided, confused and in such disorder as it is.

Read the articles posted in the "Member Articles" area or found through our links page and ask yourself this question next time someone points out a problem plaguing this country: Is this something that could be solved by my state or local government without federal intervention?

You just may be surprised at how many times the answer is "Yes".

If you begin to see what we see, we invite you to join us in our cause. Together we can restore America as the supreme example of Liberty in the world and make this a government truly run by the people.

History

American Freemen officially began in March of 2006. Then known as the "Minarchy Group", it was much less formal than it is today, being more a forum for debate and discussion of political ideas and philosophies.

In mid-August 2006, the Minarchy Group had its first official meeting and one month later took the name American Freemen as its new official name.

Currently American Freemen meetings consist of a lecture followed by a discussion based on the contents of the lecture. These have proved helpful in clarifying the groups views on government and introducing new members to some important concepts.

Long-Term Goals

The long term goals of American Freemen are to continue our efforts at educating the American people about the proper role of government and promoting measured progress towards realizing this in American government.

There is no plan on forming a political party, but we hope that politicians will embrace the American Freemen ideologies and that Americans will actively seek out these politicians for office. Perhaps, one day, there will be no need for an organization like American Freemen... when all Americans know the concepts of Liberty and teach these concepts to their children and to everyone they know.
